Somerset Day (Saturday 11 May)  is only a few weeks away and the Museum team are busy preparing for our South Somerset road trip.

We’ll be giving away one hundred single entry Museum tickets on our journey so we’re pleased to announce that we can now reveal where you can find us on the day, as well of some of the local businesses that are taking part in our journey.

 

 

 

 

The first stop on our journey is the historic town of Castle Cary, which nestles in the beautiful undulating hills of South Somerset. Here, we’ll be joined by Mr Burns, from Burns the Bread with his classic 1930’s Bedford Van which has been rebuilt from the ground up.

Established in 1983 Burns the Bread has steadily expanded into the successful Family Business you see today with three generations of the Burns family at the helm. With seven shops and a fantastic School of Baking, they are hard at work perfecting their trade and making sure customers leave their shops a little bit happier than when they came in.

Bruton is the second stop planned on our journey. Recently visited by Her Majesty & described by Visit Somerset as “a bit of a one off” and “one of Somerset’s local centres of creativity”. Find us in amongst the many shops on the bustling high street.

 

…Shortly after we’ll be making a stop at the nearby Wykes farm, a family business that have been farming and making award-winning cheddar in the heart of Somerset for over 150 years.  They have a wonderful interactive timeline on their website which shows the rich history of their business

 

We’re lucky that our road trip falls on the 2nd Saturday of the month, which means we can incorporate the wonderful Langport Vintage Market into our road trip. The market started in August 2017 and has steadily grown into one of the best vintage markets in the area. We think our classic car will look right at home here. The next leg of our journey takes us to a small village in Somerset which is also the home of  Perry’s Cider. They’ve been making craft cider since 1920 and operate open cider mills to the public, along with their own orchards, farm and cider shop, café and small museum on the family farm here. They are one of the UK’s most highly respected and awarded cider companies. With nearly 100 years of know-how all on one site, if it hasn't seen a Somerset orchard it's not going in. 

The final stop on our road trip is the village of Stoke-sub-Hamdon, here you can find us outside at The Prince of Wales, a dog loving, family friendly pub located at the perfect spot near Ham Hill. Ham Hill is an open access site which offers superb views of the South Somerset Moors, Exmoor and the Mendip Hills and it is here that we will be completing our journey before heading back to the Museum.
