Scooters

23rd May 2016

Scooters: British Born, Italian Matured, Adopted by a Rebellious Youth.  The exhibition opened on the 21st May 2016 and highlights the birth of the scooter through to its ‘Mods’ adoption in the 60s.  Conceived originally as a ‘step through’, small wheeled motorcycle for ladies and casual users and largely forgotten in the 30’s and 40’s the motor scooter went on to resurrect the devastated Italian transport Industry post WW2.  By the time the austere 1950’s were being played out the Scooter had gained ‘chic’ status all over Europe.  In the 60’s a UK group of youthful fashionista’s known as ‘Mods’ took the scooter as their transport of choice.  The scooter in all its guises has assumed cult status.
