The Rover SD1
British Leyland is often criticised for making cars that are not very good. This point is moot, but not for discussion here. Instead we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the launch of the SD1. In 1976 the press enthused about the car’s V8 power, sleek Italianate looks and the great value for money it offered when compared with its rivals. The SD1 was named the European Car of the Year in 1977. The Museum has one of only two BL prototype estate SD1s in its collection; the car is currently part of our reserve collection and not on display. However, the car truly deserves the limelight and so we hope to make it available to our visitors in the not too distant future. Look out for announcements.
