RIP Eric Broadley MBE
Eric Broadley MBE has died at the age of 88. Following success with his Lola Mk 1 in 1958, Broadley established Lola Cars Ltd where over 30 examples of that car were produced. 1963 was the year when the Lola Mk 6 GT was first seen at Le Mans in France and, although the car was not successful due to technical problems, it nevertheless interested the Ford Motor Company which was looking for a way to beat Ferrari at that famous 24 hour race. Broadley subsequently joined the newly formed Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough, Berkshire, and helped create the iconic Ford GT40 which would eventually go on to beat its Italian competitor in grand style in 1966.
An original GT40 is a rare thing indeed. Imitation is said to be a sincere form of flattery and we are glad that Eric’s legacy is reflected in our collection by the 1994 replica GT40 which can be found in our ‘Supercar Century’ display.
