The Dawn of Motoring

This exhibition looks at some examples of the very first motor cars in the world, including a 1885 Benz Replica-Motorwagen and a 1898 Daimler Wagonette.

The Benz Patent-Motorwagen is particularly significant as it was the world's first motorised car, made successful by Bertha and Karl Benz. Bertha Benz drove her husband’s new three-wheeled invention on the first ever long-distance road trip, and in doing so, attracted enough media attention that the car began to be seen as something more than just an experiment.
