Most of us enjoy collecting souvenirs from trips abroad, but few of us go as far as Richard Hammond. After falling in love with the affectionately named ‘Oliver’ while filming a Top Gear special in Botswana, he simply had to bring it home.

Humble, lovable and tough describe perfectly this modest Opel Kadett A from 1963. Powered by a one litre engine delivering a spirited 40 bhp the car was innovative for its day with a lightweight body and impressive handling. Its practical styling features a roomy boot and delightful interior. Hammond loved the car so much he added two more Kadetts, Olivia and Daphne, to his collection.

Carefully restored to its original specification, Oliver proves everyday cars can become timeless classics. Equally at home navigating the African desert or popping to the shops, this Kadett has something rarely found in today’s cars: undeniable character and charm.
