The Austin Arrow EV: A Modern Take on a Classic Legacy

4th Feb 2025

The Austin 7 was a car that not only put Britain on the move but also inspired generations of enthusiasts to modify, improve, and better understand their vehicles. A century after its debut, the spirit of this classic has been reborn in the form of the Austin Arrow EV – a modern electric car infused with the heritage and charm of its iconic predecessor.

At Haynes Motor Museum, we were delighted to see the return of the Austin name in such a fitting tribute. The Austin 7 holds a special place in our history, as it was the very first car modified by our founder, John Haynes OBE. His transformation of an Austin 7 into the Austin 750 Special ultimately led to the creation of the world-famous Haynes Manuals. Just as John explored new ways to understand and enjoy classic cars, engineer John Stubbs, is now doing the same, bringing the joy of early motoring into the modern era.

The Austin Arrow, a lightweight two-seater electric quadricycle, stays true to the essence of the original 1922 Austin 7 while incorporating modern technology. It retains the charm of vintage motoring with its drum brakes, leaf spring suspension, and classic 18-inch spoked wheels, yet offers a refined and precise driving experience. With a top speed of 60mph, a range of 119 miles, and a charging time of just three hours, the Arrow provides a fun and sustainable way to enjoy motoring history.

This philosophy closely mirrors John Haynes’ own approach. His first-hand experience with the Austin 7 and his passion for modifying cars led him to document the process, ultimately launching the Haynes Manuals. Today, both the Austin 7 and John’s Austin 750 Special are proudly displayed in the Museum’s John Haynes Exhibition, which celebrates his incredible journey, from that first modified car to the creation of the Museum we see today, now marking its 40th year.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are looking forward to honouring John’s legacy further with the John Haynes Classic Show later this year. The event will bring together classic car enthusiasts and celebrate the enduring influence of the vehicles that shaped motoring history.

The Austin Arrow is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Austin 7, proving that even a century later, its spirit lives on—now with a modern electric twist. Just as John Haynes inspired countless enthusiasts to tinker, modify, and better understand their cars, the Austin Arrow continues that legacy, ensuring the joy of classic motoring is accessible to a new generation.
